Writing training courses

Writing Skills in Science – workshop on improving participants' scientific writing proficiency, awareness of reader engagement, and confidence in manuscript preparation through the use of various sentence-level language structures and techniques.

Understanding Scientific English – techniques for analyzing and editing complex aspects of published texts, with a focus on adapting writing styles to convey specific messages.

Writing for Publication – language skills for adapting to evolving publishing trends and scientific journal requirements, as well as making informed writing choices that take into consideration the influence of AI.

*New - From ideas to publication: Generative AI and its impact on the writing process - An examination of generative artificial intelligence's impact on the various stages of the writing process - planning, drafting, and editing -  that gives scientific writers the knowledge to help them decide on if/when/how to use Gen AI in their manuscripts.  

*New - Workshop: Examining Effective Writing in Practice - This workshop is a hands-on approach to learning academic writing where students present influential papers from their fields. Together we examine components of effective writing (such as signposting, metadiscourse, etc.), followed by structured time for students to write, receive, and provide constructive feedback.

Scientific Writing Bootcamp intensive writing workshop focusing on real-time production of short and targeted texts across fields and across academic writing genres.

Grant Writing – guide to preparing international grant applications in English

Postdoc Packet Preparation – guide to preparing an application packet for postdoctoral positions

Reading in the Sciences – introduction to the reading strategies, both individually and collectively, that help readers actively engage with challenging texts that may contain unfamiliar jargon.

Speaking workshops

Science Talks – practice, improve and become more at ease speaking about science in general

Public Speaking – prepare to give a formal presentation on stage at a conference

3MT® Competition – competition preparation for explaining a doctoral thesis to a non-specialist audience in three minutes.

Debating – weekly debates on various societal challenges in parliamentary debate format

Intercultural Communication courses

*New - Intercultural Communication: Exploring the Complexities of Identity, Culture, and the Encounter with the Other - Explore how personal and cultural identities shape our perceptions, behaviours, and interactions with others. Through practical tools such as the dimensional approach and Michel Sauquet’s Culturoscope, participants will learn to better understand and navigate the complexities of cultural differences, particularly in academic and professional settings.
